{"id":9746,"date":"2021-01-21T14:06:50","date_gmt":"2021-01-21T14:06:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rmc-sudan.net\/?p=9746"},"modified":"2021-01-21T14:06:51","modified_gmt":"2021-01-21T14:06:51","slug":"rmc-tunisia-tunisians-rally-to-demand-release-of-detained-protesters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rmc-sudan.net\/en\/9746\/","title":{"rendered":"RMC Tunisia : Tunisians rally to demand release of detained protesters"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Tunisians are protesting the detention of hundreds of young demonstrators arrested over several nights of disturbances, demanding their release and venting their anger against the government\u2019s handling of a deepening social crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Approximately 100 people rallied in the capital, Tunis, and the city of Sousse on Wednesday in defiance of gatherings banned following a recent surge in coronavirus cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We want the detainees to be freed,\u201d the protesters cried in Sousse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Tunis, protesters \u2013 many of them students \u2013 shouted slogans from the country\u2019s 2011 revolution, including \u201cfreedom, work, national dignity\u201d, as they moved along the capital\u2019s arterial Habib Bourguiba avenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daytime\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/1\/20\/tunisias-youth-led-protests-explained\">protests<\/a>\u00a0in recent days demanding jobs, dignity and the release of detainees have been followed by nighttime violence, with COVID-19 restrictions compounding a wider economic malaise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The protests come as the economy is in free-fall, youth unemployment soaring and anger rising against a political class that has shown itself incapable of pulling together for the nation \u2013 gripes in sharpened focus as the country last week marked 10 years since the fall of former leader Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Tuesday, Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi acknowledged Tunisians\u2019 \u201clegitimate\u201d anger in a televised address but said the violence was \u201cunacceptable\u201d and promised to \u201cconfront it with the force of law\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYour voice is heard and your anger is legitimate \u2026 do not allow saboteurs among you,\u201d he said, addressing protesters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hundreds have been arrested since the nighttime clashes erupted late last week amid a four-day lockdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tunisia often sees protests around such key anniversaries in January, but this year\u2019s clashes come as the coronavirus pandemic has deepened socioeconomic woes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Much of the unrest has hit working-class neighbourhoods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clashes also took place in Kasserine, Kairouan and Kef, according to National Guard spokesman Houssemeddine Jebabli, who said a further 41 people had been arrested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The interior ministry said on Monday more than 600 people had been arrested.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tunisians are protesting the detention of hundreds of young demonstrators arrested over several nights of disturbances, demanding their release and venting their anger against the government\u2019s handling of a deepening social crisis.
